East St. Louis students head back to school
EAST ST. LOUIS, IL (KTVI) – It’s the first day back in class for students in East St. Louis School District 189. School is starting late because of construction at the high school.
District leaders say safety concerns due to construction delayed the start of school for the entire district. Classes were originally supposed to start August 21.
There have been major renovations at the high school, changes the district hopes will improve the education experience for the 1,300 students who attend classes there.
The decision to delay the start of school came in late July when district leaders realized the roof at the high school still needed to be repaired and the floor wasn’t finished. Teachers came in last week to start getting ready.
There is plenty of work to do throughout District 189. Statistics show basically all the schools in the district did not meet the annual yearly progress report last year in reading and in math.
The high school also did not meet its graduation goal.
