Thousands honor March On Washington anniversary
WASHINGTON D.C. (KPLR)- Thousands of people from across the United States, including St. Louis, are in Washington D.C. this weekend commemorating the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. Wednesday, August 28, will mark 50 years since Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech.
On Saturday, marchers met at the Lincoln Memorial for the National Action to Realize the Dream March. The crowd heard speeches from political leaders and civil rights activists on subjects like racial equality, income inequality, discrimination based on sexual orientation, and mistreatment of immigrants. The crowd then marched to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.
A special rally is also planned on the National Mall for Wednesday. President Obama will speak on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
