SPRINGFIELD, IL (KPLR) - Governor Quinn has signed a bill to increase the speed limit on some rural Illinois highways. Lawmakers passed the bill in May raising the speed limit to 70 miles per hour.

Illinois now joins 36 other states, including Missouri, that already have 70 mile an hour limits. Proponents say the increase will help the trucking industry.

Opponents warn it would lead to more highway deaths.

The new speed limit will take effect on January 1, 2014.
