(KTVI) - Nervous parents prepared to let their Normandy students take a long bus ride to their new schools in the Francis Howell School District Thursday morning.

Some Normandy families prepared to gather at Kienlen Avenue and Wells Avenue in Wellston.  Parents said they were a little on edge for one main reason:  After years of their kids going to school just a few minutes from home, these moms and dads are sending their precious cargo at least 40 minutes away to St. Charles County.

But, families got a little warm-up exercise with “Transition Day” on Tuesday.  Kids got to take a trip on their new bus routes and meet some of their new classmates.  Still, some Normandy parents expressed concern about how their kids would be received on the first day of school.

Earlier this summer, some Francis Howell parents said they were worried that crime and safety issues would follow the transfer students.  Other Francis Howell parents reached out, saying they would receive all kids from Normandy with open arms.

The transfer students were ready to take an expensive ride.  But, the unaccredited Normandy School District was writing the check for bus rides and tuition.

On the other side of the transfer, Francis Howell school officials are preparing for the unprecedented transfer.  All 18 schools in the district are receiving students from Normandy.  But Central High School will get the most with 54 students.

Francis Howell leaders say they're ready to welcome the Normandy students.  They have set up mentor programs for new students to help them with the transition process.
