(KTVI) – The Fourth of July is less than a month away and in Belleville there is a new safety law in effect.

Consumers must now show they have taken a 15 minute safety class.  The city is enforcing a state law that requires residents to pass a test to buy fireworks such as cones, cakes and mortars.

The free class is not required to buy novelty fireworks such as sparklers, party poppers and snakes.

The class is a Powerpoint presentation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office and will be available through the Belleville Fire Department.
