ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) – There were some frightening moments for a father overnight when his SUV was stolen with his 2-year-old boy asleep inside.

It happened when the 44-year-old father left his 2013 Ford Escape running as he got out of the SUV to use a midtown ATM around 11:45pm Tuesday.

Fortunately, police did find the child and he is ok.

St. Louis police are now investigating the case not only as a stolen car, but also as a kidnapping.

This all went down at the St. Louis Community Credit Union on Forest Park Avenue in midtown near Grand and very close to Saint Louis University.

Investigators say the suspect was a passenger in a dark grey Chevy Impala that pulled up alongside the victim's Escape.

Police tell us the suspect jumped out of the Impala and into the victim's Escape then drove off with the SUV.

The father apparently saw the suspect take off in his SUV and ran to call police from a nearby gas station.

The Escape was discovered in an alley on Montgomery in north St. Louis near Glasgow after a resident saw someone get out of the vehicle and run away. That alert resident called police.

Police say the resident saw the suspect ditch the escape and run away just six minutes after the SUV was stolen from the credit union.

The location where the SUV was found is only a couple of miles away from the credit union.

Police say the 2-year-old boy slept through the whole thing.

In addition to the toddler being ok, nothing else was reported missing from the SUV.

The suspect is still at large.
