(KTVI) – The new Timelapse project is a joint effort between Google, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), NASA and TIME. It is a collection of 2,068,467 images that span the entire world and date back to 1984.
Google made some of the best images into animated gifs. You can see all of them here.
The USGS and NASA have an ongoing mission called Landsat. Satellites orbiting Earth from space since the 1970s have all been archived on tape drives. This project is an effort to make those images public.
Google published this statement in their blog about the images, “This time-lapse map is not only fascinating to explore, but we also hope it can inform the global community’s thinking about how we live on our planet and the policies that will guide us in the future. A special thanks to all our partners who helped us to make this happen.”
