Soldan High Teacher Accused of Having Sex With Student
ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) – A St. Louis city high school teacher is behind bars, charged with sodomizing a teenage boy who attends his school. David Marler, 32, teaches math at Soldan High School on Union.
Court documents say Marler lured the boy, who is between 14 and 17 years old, to a residence around the corner from the Soldan on Sunday, April 11th. The “residence” is presumably one of two abandoned houses on Cates.
Once inside, prosecutors say Marler first attempted to get the boy high.
“The defendant furnished the victim with an inhalant and suggested or told him to inhale it. And the victim described the feeling as making him lightheaded and dizzy,” Neal Miller from the Circuit Attorney’s office said.
From there, Marler allegedly engaged the teen in a series of graphic sex acts over a period of about three hours. It’s enough to charge Marler with five different counts of sodomy, one for each act reported.
St. Louis public schools would only say that they reported the wrongdoing and that Marler is on a leave of absence. They describe it as a “personnel matter.”
At the school, they clearly did not want the attention. There were students who, with parental permission, were prepared to discuss the incident and David Marler, but a man describing himself as “an administrator” at Soldan threatened the teens with suspension if they spoke to reporters.
Adults with ties to the school were clearly unnerved by news of what had happened.
Celeste Jordon, who was picking up her grandson Tuesday afternoon, just shook her head.
“It’s very disheartening. You hear about that a lot these days and you just don’t know who to trust your kids with these days.
“It’s very disheartening with teachers,” she went on. “They’re supposed to be role models. They’re supposed to be molding your children to be a better citizen and students in school and part of life as they grow older.”
That’s the part of the incident that stands out to prosecutors.
“We see these kinds of sex acts performed on children all the time in our unit,” Miller said. “Unfortunately in any large city we will see a lot of that. What’s particularly unusual about this case is that involves someone in a position of trust and confidence like a teacher. “
Marler is facing five counts of statutory sodomy, five counts of a teacher engaging in sex with a student, and one count of endangering the welfare of a minor.
Police are asking that anyone else who may have been victimized by Marler contact them at 314-444-5385.
Marler is being held on $250,000 full cash bond.
