ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - The outdoor athletic complex at Saint Louis University High School is suffering from a major sinkhole problem. The latest hole opened up several days ago along the left field foul line of the varsity baseball fields. The deep hole looks to be at least 10-15 feet across.
The athletic complex underwent a major expansion and renovation several years ago, but it has been plagued with sinkholes almost since the beginning.
According to the school newspaper, The Prep News, there have been at least a dozen sink holes going back to 2004.
In an article that appeared in the August 2007 edition, there is a photo of a massive sinkhole that swallowed up a slice of the school soccer field and new track.
Then two years later it happened again, this time in the student parking lot in September of 2009.
While this latest sinkhole has been patched, the school is being tight lipped about a cause and any possible safety concerns. They refused our comment and asked us to leave the campus when we arrived to shoot this story.
An earlier article in the school paper does say the school brought in geologist to do extensive testing, but that no firm cause was indicated. It could be anything from heavy rain and run off into the nearby River Des Peres or old mine shafts that have collapsed deep below ground.
