CHESTERFIELD, MO (KTVI) -Two outlet malls underdevelopment in the Chesterfield Valley may offer some of the same stores. Chesterfield City has issued permits to Gap, J. Crew, Famous Footware, PacSun and Brooks Brothers for both malls.
A spokesperson for the St. Louis Premium Outlets development on the South side of Highway 40 said, "If there are some duplicates that's fine with us." Michele Rothstein of Simon's Premium Outlets added, "We know that shoppers are going to look at the total and we feel this property will be very, very distinctive." Premium Outlets has released a list of nearly 80 stores including an Armani outlet, Coach, Cole Haan, Kate Spade New York and Michael Kors. She indicated the firm's goal is "upscale outlet shopping." The grand opening is scheduled for August 22.
The Taubman Prestige Outlets development is waiting until late May to reveal more of its stores. Owners plan to open August 2. It is located on North Outer 40 east of Boone's Crossing. Among the stores already named are Banana Republic, Ralph Lauren and J. Crew Factory.
Assistant Professor of Marketing at Washington University Joe Goodman said he believes both malls can succeed. "The evidence is there for it if you look at other big centers around the U.S.," he said. Goodman pointed to outlet malls across the street from each other in San Marcos, Texas and a mile long strip of outlets in Orlando, Florida.
The two Chesterfield malls are about a mile and a half apart. "In retail actually there is a common belief that having a lot of retail next to each other is beneficial. They want to be a destination and they want to be able to attract people from miles.. ten, twenty, thirty miles away," Goodman said Tuesday. The malls border one of the nation's largest outdoor shopping areas in Chesterfield Commons.
