HAZELWOOD, MO (KPLR) – Missouri Governor Jay Nixon took a helicopter tour to assess Wednesday night’s tornado damaged Hazelwood.  He held a press conference Thursday morning after viewing the destruction from the air and ground.  Standing with the Mayor of Hazelwood Matt Robinson and other state an local officials, he promised aid from the state and cooperation from the other local agencies to help those in need.

Among the immediate needs he addressed, getting power back on, clearing roads and yards of debris an fallen trees, getting telecommunications back online and security for residents homes.

During his walking tour, he stopped and talked to the Tenshler family.  Brenda Tenshler had just had back surgery and her 8-year-old daughter had recently broken her ankle.  Both had trouble escaping the storms wrath, barley making into the basement as the tornado struck; leaving the family numb about the damage done to their home.

Though the Governor is offering state assistance, he also had a warning to those suffering from storm damage; be wary of out of state or town companies swooping in offer help in making repairs.  Trust your local contractors and know who you’re hiring before you start repairs.
