Billiken Pride Shines As Local Teams Prepare To Dance
ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)-The Saint Louis University Billikens are a fourth seed in the NCAA Tournament and fans couldn’t be happier. Billiken gear was flying off the shelves at the SLU bookstore Monday.
On Sunday, the Bills, who were the Atlantic 10 regular season champs, also won the A-10 tournament, beating VCU 62-56. That earned them a fourth seed in the Midwest regional in the Big Dance. That is the highest seed ever for SLU. The team was a seven seed in 1994.
“The students are coming back from Spring Break and they are all excited about the Bills win,” say assistant SLU bookstore manager Lisa Lee. “We’ve had a lot of online orders this morning as well as traffic in the store.”
Lee says more A-10 championship gear will be available online and at the store soon. They’ll also be getting new shirts in as the team advances in the NCAA Tournament.
Students are gearing up for the big basketball stage.
“It’s just really exciting for the university in general, kind of putting us on a national stage. To be able to play against teams like that on a national level, it’s really cool,” said student Daniel Murphy.
The Billikens will play 13 seed New Mexico State Thursday at 1:10 in San José, California. The team, ranked 13th in the country, has pulled together in the wake of the loss of Coach Rick Majerus, who died on December 1 due to heart failure.
Lee said, “He would be so proud of this group of guys. I think he helped to foster this team, build this team. And they are doing him proud this year.”
Of course, the Mizzou Tigers and the Fighting Illini also made the NCAA Tournament. Ninth seed Mizzou will face off against eighth seed Colorado State Thursday at 8:20 in Lexington, KY. Illinois, a seven seed, will face tenth seed Colorado Friday at 3:30pm in Austin, TX.
