Water Main Break Will Keep Market St. Shut Down Until Friday
ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) – A water main break late Wednesday night will keep Market Street shut down until at least Friday morning.
The 12-inch main broke on Market Street in front of the main Post Office. Street crews shut down all lanes between 16th and 17th Streets. Water punched several holes through Market and cracked the pavement from one sidewalk to the other.
St. Louis Water Department dispatchers got the call at 10:30pm Wednesday. Witnesses said the street turned into a river. Crews shut down the main around midnight.
A backhoe arrived around 5:15am Thursday, but the spray paint on the street marked lines that carried other utilities. The crews had to be cleared by those companies before they could dig. Water Department dispatchers had hoped the repairs could be made by Thursday afternoon, but the damage was too severe.
Both directions of Market Street remain closed to all traffic. It will remain closed until late morning or early afternoon Friday. Ameren crews will make repairs under the street from 6:00pm-midnight, when street crews will begin repairs.
Street crews say the ground under the pavement was heavily damaged by the rushing water.
A St. Louis Blues hockey will be played Thursday night. If you are headed downtown, you will want to avoid Market Street.
