Mendte: Federal Budget
NEW YORK, NY. (KPLR) – Larry Mendte suggests what it may really take for the two sides to finally come to a deal.
Do you realize that during the recession and its aftermath, we haven`t had a new federal budget?
Explains a lot doesn`t it.
Oh there is a budget deadline when the president is supposed to propose a budget and a deadline when the budget is supposed to be passed our government has just chosen to ignore those deadlines.
Why?
Because when you submit a budget you actually lay all your cards on the table and the other side is able to pick it apart and attack you.
And that is why no matter your political leanings you have to give Paul Ryan some credit, twice now he has had the courage to write a budget, submit it and defend it, he is about to submit another one.
Now I don`t like everything in Ryan’s budget and some of it is purely political like the repeal of Obamacare which is not going to happen.
But the idea of just blasting it without coming up with an alternative is unacceptable and that is what happened last time he submitted a budget.
My hope is that this time instead of just attacking, democrats come up with an alternative budget and the two sides negotiate and come up with a real budget where neither side can claim victory, but America wins.
I know, I know it`s a fantasy and it`s amazing that we have fallen so far in this political divide that just hoping for a budget something that used to be expected is now fantasy.
But it`s important; because without a budget, how can you possibly balance the budget, how do you balance something that doesn`t exist.
And yet we are still promised it all of the time see I’m not the only one who engages in fantasy.
