Belleville Scoutmaster, Son Killed In Crash
BELLEVILLE, IL (KTVI)–Belleville’s Boy Scouting community is mourning the death of a much admired Scout leader and his youngest son. Scott Hutchison and his son Zachery were killed when the family vehicle spun out on icy pavement Friday night. Hutchison’s wife Angie and older son Jacob survived with broken bones. Both are hospitalized.
Belleville police say the family was heading west bound on Rt. 13 near the west end of Belleville about 8:30 pm Friday when the car slid on ice and crossed into oncoming traffic. Winter weather had moved into the area causing slick spots on roads. The Illinois State Police report as many as ten accidents in the Route 15 corridor.
Hutchison was Scoutmaster of Belleville Troop 12. Zachery was a Cub Scout and his brother Jacob a Scout. The parent of two Scouts in the troop, Angie Barry described them as a “strong, strong family well liked by everyone who meets them.” She said both parents were deeply involved in the boys’ schools and Scouting. “They were always having a good time and making it a good time for everybody else there too,” she added.
A parent committee from Troop 12 issued a statement Saturday. In part it said, “The Hutchison family has touched so many of us within the West End Belleville community by dedicating themselves to helping others. We will be here to support their family with whatever they need.”
Four others were killed in the area on Illinois roads Friday night. An accident on Rt. 15 near the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows involved a vehicle that spun out and flew over the concrete median striking two other cars. The driver and a passenger in the airborne car were killed. They are identified as 27 year old Robin Scott and 17 year old Jyieosha Dewalt.
The Washington County Coroner reported the death of a father and son in a seven vehicle accident on I-54. Coroner Mark Styninger identified the victims as 37 year old Derek Houle of Bluford and seven year old Journey Houle of Mt. Vernon. The pair and another child had left their stranded SUV after it slid into a muddy median. A second car skidded on black ice and ran into all three. Destiny Houle,12, was seriously injured.
