ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)– What’s next for the Rams? The city says it will reject an arbitrator’s ruling in favor of the Rams about upgrading the dome.
So the next step is likely talks over a new stadium. But since taxpayer funding is unlikely would the Rams be willing to stay if they have to pay for their own stadium?
The arbitrators ruled that it would take $700 million in taxpayer-funded changes to make the dome among the NFL’s top stadiums. So would that mean talks over a new Rams stadium? If so, where would it be? And who would pay for it? Or might the Rams head back to Los Angeles in 2015?
When it comes to a new home for the Rams team owner Stan Kroenke may have three choices.
“He’s either going to move to Los Angeles if Los Angeles gets their act together and builds a stadium. Or he’s going to fork over the money himself here in St. Louis or he decides I don’t want to pay that money, I can’t move to LA. I’m going to sell the team,” said Webster University sports economist Patrick Rishe.
Relocating from St. Louis to a proposed new stadium in Los Angeles would mean selling part of the team to stadium developers. Staying in St. Louis would mean building a new stadium without much help from taxpayers.
Might the Rams be like the Cardinals? The Cardinals built the new Busch Stadium with their own money. And they’re paying almost all of the costs for the new Ballpark Village which breaks ground this week.
A few locations have been mentioned, the old Chrysler plant in Fenton, he bottle district area downtown just north of the dome. But would Rams owner Kroenke be willing to spend between $800 million and a billion dollars of his own money for a new stadium here?
None of this will happen immediately. The Rams are obligated to play two more seasons in the dome. They wouldn’t be free to move until March of 2015 which gives all sides two years and one month to come up with some sort of plan.
