“The King” and “The Man.” STL remembers Dr. King and Stan Musial
ST. LOUIS, MO. (KPLR) – Stan “The Man” Musial and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were on the minds of many St. Louisans on Monday, including Martin Mathew.
“I met Stan in 1942 and watched Dr. King throughout the movement,” he said.
Mathew, who is black, became friends with Musial and began collecting Musial jerseys and other items.
“He was a great ball player, and a great friend,” Mathew said.
Like Dr. King, Musial judged people by the content of their character, according to Mathew.
“His right guided him to do the right thing,” Mathew said.
Mathew said Musial’s death was a tough blow, but he also said the slugger’s memory “will live on.”
“He really left a legacy,” he said. “As did Dr. King.”
