Mendte: Gun Control Over Shadowing Other Issues

NEW YORK, NY. (KPLR) – Larry Mendte is also talking gun control Thursday. But he doesn’t like all of the attention it’s getting.

In 2009 with the nation waste deep in a recession and high unemployment, President Obama pushed for healthcare reform, as his first term priority.

And now in 2013, with the nation still dealing with a slow recovery and high unemployment, the president is pushing gun control as his second term priority.

Setting up another bitter battle with congress and another Supreme Court battle that will dominate the next few years.

The president`s plan is the most comprehensive gun control measure ever proposed by a White House.

It includes a push to improve mental health care and in a move that is sure to raise eyebrows, basically deputizes doctors to be ‘too crazy to carry a gun’ whistle blowers.

It pushes for universal background checks, a measure that will pass congress.

It pushes for banning magazine clips that carry more than 10 bullets;  a measure that will pass,  but is silly because gun experts will tell you it is easy to reload.

And it pushes for a ban on a long list of semi-automatic rifles and this will not pass, and word is the White House put this on the list to appease the democratic base but will not push for it.

The president didn`t name the NRA by name, but alluded to the fight he expects with them.

The NRA did name the president by name in a new ad, calling him a hypocrite for not pushing for armed security at schools since he does have armed security for his daughters at their school.

More than anything else this ad shows the NRA is serious about fighting the president and the organization has money and influence, to take this constitutional fight from the halls of congress to the nation`s highest court.

Deficit reduction, jobs, tax reform, oh and the promised immigration reform, that will again be put off for another day.

All lost in the noise of a gun battle.
