Jacology: Gun Demonstrations

(KPLR) – In Wednesday's Jacology, Charles Jaco looks at the demonstration in the works over gun control, planned just before the president's inauguration.

What's the expiration date on simple human decency? Based on an email I received, it seems to be 35 days. That's the amount of time between the slaughter at Sandy Hook elementary school and the day some gun owners have declared to be gun appreciation day.

That orgy of lock and load happens on January 19th, the day before President Obama's inaugurated for a second term. Get the paranoid symbolism? That Kenyan Muslim is back in the White House with a United Nations plan to take all your guns, so we'll stage a bunch of gun-toting rallies the day before.

Groups with Orwellian names like the Citizens Committee for the Right To Bear Arms want to make it clear that their right to carry weapons does not come with any responsibilities. Sort of like my four year old granddaughter throwing a tantrum. If she doesn't get her way, she makes a lot of noise and pouts.

It's a good analogy for militant gun owners. Like a four year old, they think they have the right to do whatever they want. They want to be able to own unlimited amounts of deadly weapons. But they do not want all gun buyers subject to background checks. They want weapons from AR-15's to rocket propelled grenades to be legal. They think any attempt at gun or ammo regulation interferes with their rights.

What rights? The right to insult the memories of the kids who were murdered? The right to insult the  memories of the victims from the Aurora, Colorado theatre shooting? Or the shopping mall shooting in Oregon? Or the Sikh Temple shooting in Wisconsin? Or the next people to die because we can't control our obsession with high powered weapons?

I'm Charles Jaco and that's Jacology.
