Pride Fest Moving Downtown
ST. LOUIS, MO. (KPLR) – Pride fest is saying good bye to Tower Grove Park and hello to Downtown.
Pride St. Louis incorporated announced today that the 2013 pride fest will take place at Soldiers Memorial in Downtown St. Louis.
Pride St. Louis is an organization that works to raise understanding and acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. For years pride fest with its parade has been held in Tower Grove Park in South St. Louis. But the organization says the annual event is growing and the move downtown will bring new opportunities for more people to attend the festival.
St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay welcomed the move saying in a statement, “Downtown was built by St. Louisans who like a great parade. I am very pleased to welcome Pride St. Louis to the city’s best parade route. I also predict the biggest party downtown has seen in decades.”
Pride Fest is scheduled to take place June 29th and 30th at Soldier’s Memorial. The move also coincides with recent developments on gay rights in the metro area.
The St. Louis County Council passed an ordinance adding gender identity and sexual orientation to the county`s anti-discrimination regulations and hate crimes law.
The City of St. Louis was ranked as one of the most LGBT friendly cities in the U.S. by The Human Rights Campaign.
Some reaction to the move is showing up on social media. Some online comments praise the move to downtown because of its high profile but others criticize the move saying the economically.
