Traffic was moving smoothly Monday morning in both directions. But on Sunday, nearly two million pounds of steel from the westbound side of the bridge went crashing into the Missouri River from the blast.
The section that came down was just across from the Ameristar Casino. Traffic was stopped on the eastbound side of the bridge for about 40 minutes during the demolition. MoDOT says things went smoothly during the blast, minimizing delays for drivers.
Crews have 48 hours to remove the debris from the river. MoDOT said workers had already taken quite a bit of steel out of the river by Monday morning. It only took 25 pounds of explosives to bring the section of the bridge down. The rest of the westbound span is set to come down in another blast in the first week of December.
