St. Louis Girl Stars In Viral Video, “It’s Thanksgiving”
ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) – There are hundreds of songs about Christmas, but when it comes to Thanksgiving, that’s a different tune.
Or at least it used to be, until 12-year-old Nicole Westbrook`s YouTube music video ‘It`s Thanksgiving’ has already garnered five million hits.
“I never thought it would get this many hits,” Westbrook said. “It was just a dream come true.”
Four years ago, a job transfer led to Nicole and her family to move from the St. Louis suburb of Oakville to the Los Angeles suburb of Van Nuys, giving her an opportunity to pursue her showbiz dreams while attending a school for the performing arts.
Her big break came seven months ago, when she was discovered by video producer Patrice Wilson who had a similar internet hit last year with a song called “Friday.”
Among those stunned by Nicole’s sudden fame are her grandparents, Irene and Dick Westbrook, who live in Eureka, Missouri.
“We had a graduation party for her brother,” said Irene Westbrook. “I think she was four and she was dancing for everybody and someone said you dance pretty good and she said, well I`ve been dancing all my life.”
Dick Westbrook, the legendary soccer coach at Visitation Academy, is thrilled by his granddaughter`s sudden success.
“This is what she is looking for I guess. She wants to get into acting. So hopefully it will open some doors for her if that is what she wants to pursue so all the more power to her,” he said.
Despite its popularity, “It’s Thanksgiving” is being branded a turkey by a lot of self-appointed critics who comments appear next to the video on YouTube.
Most of them however are grousing about the quality of the song— not the singer.
“They are not letting her read the stuff on the internet and thank God for that,” Dick Westbrook said. “She is so happy now, why put a negative in there.”
Nicole says she doesn`t mind criticism.
“I could care less about what they think,” she said.
The song, ‘It`s Thanksgiving’ goes on sale Wednesday on YouTube.
