ST. CHARLES, MO. (KPLR) – The big Blanchette Bridge traffic shift is about to take place.  On Sunday all of the west bound traffic will be shifted to the span that normally carries only eastbound traffic.

In order to make room for traffic from both directions, the span has been re-striped for six lanes, 3 in each direction.

Some drivers have concerns and some business owners want to clear up any confusion.

James Kenny is the manager of Grandma's Cookies on Main Street in St. Charles.

"It`s not like the bridge is going to completely shut down," said Kenny.  "It's just going to take a little longer."

MoDOT encourages drivers to try alternate routes such as the Page Avenue Extension or Highway 370.

This is how MoDOT explains the schedule of work to be done this weekend.

Friday, Nov. 2 - ramp from northbound Fifth Street to eastbound I-70 closes at noon

Friday, Nov. 2 - only two lanes open eastbound I-70 from 94 through the bridge starts at noon until 5 a.m. Monday; one lane closed westbound I-70 starting at 8 p.m. from Earth City to Fifth Street

Saturday, Nov 3 - only two lanes open westbound I-70 starting at 5 a.m. until 5 a.m. Monday

Sunday, Nov. 4 - westbound I-70 ramps at Earth City Expressway and at Fifth Street closed for several hours; sometime Sunday all I-70 traffic is rerouted to eastbound bridge and the westbound bridge is closed.

The cost of the project is $63 million and is expected to last until the fall of 2013.
