SUNSET HILLS, MO (KTVI) - Sunset Hills police are investigating what they believe to be a murder suicide. Police chief William LaGrand identified the victims as Wayne Bales, 73, and Monique Martin, 72.

Their bodies were found inside Bales' Sunset Hills home on Maclane Court Sunday morning. The two were scheduled to go on a cruise with friends but never arrived at the airport.

LaGrand says after friends contacted a family member, Bale's brother rushed to the home where he discovered the bodies.

"The male victim was lying flat on his back on the bed and the female victim was laying face down on the floor, on the other side of the bed," said LaGrand.

He said Martin was the one who shot Bale and then shot herself. The chief said Bale and Martin each had one gun shot wound to the head.

"This is really sad," said longtime friend Henry Ahlvers. "He didn't deserve this."

Bales owned a small auto lot in Fenton and several other properties including a fast food restaurant.

Sunset Hills police are unaware of any previous problems between the couple. LaGrand said they lived together off and on for several years.

One neighbor said the couple had been together for 30 years.

Police say they are still investigating in an effort to determine a motive.
