How bad was president Obama's performance? And how good was Mitt Romney's? Enough to move the polls in Romney's favor in numerous states. Enough so that both Bill Maher and Ice-T tweeted that the president should stop smoking weed before a debate. Enough so that Al Gore claimed the president was affected by the altitude at the debate site in Denver.
In any event that presidential deer-in-the-headlights moment means tonight V.P. debate is awfully important. In one corner, Joe Biden. I know, I know; A lot of people think he's a punchline. But Biden's one of the most adept debaters in DC. He knows policy. And he's sure to go after Ryan on everything from foreign policy, to social security and medicare.
Congressman Ryan is largely expected to outshine Biden. But hold the phone. Ryan knows policy and is smooth when it comes to articulating it. But he can sometimes be factually challenged. His speech at the republican convention was chock full of, shall we say, "Untrue statements". And he's never been in a debate like this before.
So I expect the debate to cover a lot of substance. I expect it will be a pretty even match. And I suspect that if Biden doesn't at least hold his own with Ryan then president Obama's push for a second term could be in a whole lot of trouble.
