ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) – The legs of the Gateway Arch shine in the sun and the unsightly stains on the iconic monument aren’t affecting the structure.

The results of a new report indicate the corrosion on the arch’s exterior is not structural. The engineers say it is as structurally sound today as it was the day it was built.  Many of the discolorations are due to pollutants in the atmosphere and inadequate cleaning as well as natural corrosion.

Now, samples will be taken to determine the type of corrosion and the best way to clean it.
