FAYETTE COUNTY, IL (KTVI) – There were some tense moments overnight in Fayette County, Illinois after a 4-year-old girl was reported missing to authorities. An intense search started, but then the little girl turned up safe.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department was one of five agencies that responded after the family of the little girl initially reported her missing.
Fayette County Sheriff Aaron Lay says crews conducted a thorough search of the area both on the ground and in the air.
This all started about 10:30pm Sunday in the small, rural community of Vera. Sheriff Lay says the girl’s family went to check on the four year old and she wasn’t in her bed. They became worried when they couldn’t find her and called police.
Besides the Fayette County Sheriffs’ Department, Illinois State Police, Arch Helicopter and the Vandalia police and fire departments all responded and started searching for the girl.
Around 1:45am Monday, the 4-year-old mysteriously turned up safe in her bed.
At this point, Lay says the investigation is ongoing but there is no evidence of any crime.
The still unanswered question – where the child was for more than three hours.
Lay tells us investigators will likely speak to the girl’s family later Monday to try and answer that and perhaps other questions.
Whatever the case, people are just thankful the little girl is ok.
