Illinois Reports It’s First West Nile Virus Death For 2012

CHICAGO, IL. (KPLR) – The Illinois Department of Public Health is report the states first death from West Nile Virus in 2012.  The death occurred in DuPage County, where a man in his 70’s died from West Nile Virus and a underlying health condition this past weekend.

The first case of West Nile Virus occurred in Crawford County in Southern Illinois, with a woman in her 80’s testing positive for the virus.

Nationwide, this has been a very active year for the West Nile Virus, which is transmitted to humans via mosquitoes.  All in all, 693 case of West Nile Virus have been reported to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention CDC in Atlanta.

The largest numbers of cases have been in Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma, South Dakota and California.
