ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - How scared are you? How angry are you? The answers to those questions will determine how you'll vote this fall or whether you'll vote at all. President Franklin Roosevelt once said the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. In modern America, we've added quite a few other items to the list.

Take guns. After recent mass shootings, gun sales have spiked. Why? Gun dealers say it's because people are afraid new gun laws will be passed to make it tougher to buy guns. But the question here is, What are all these people so afraid of that they think they need an arsenal to protect themselves? If you ask them, they'll say vaguely, crime. But it's more than that.

Or take health insurance. Most people know what a  nightmare the current sywstem is. They also know you have to fight insurance companies every step of the way if you get sick. But people are afraid of health care refiorm aka Obamacare. They say they're afraid of a giant federal government screwing up the health care and insurancer system. But it's more than that.

People are angry and scared because the economy is in the dumps and they're worried they'll not have enough money to get by. They're also scared because America is changing. Non-white people of all kinds becoming a larger share of the population. They're also angry because they feel almost everything, from banks to Wall Street to the government are out of control.

People who are scared make stupid decisions. And we can expect plenty of those come election day. This kind of fear is unworthy of the American people. But it's what we're stuck with.
