MO National Guard Soldier Killed In Training Exercise

UNION, MO (KPLR) – A Missouri National guardsman has died. Staff Sgt. Robert J. Traxel of Union, Mo. died Monday during a training exercise in Guatemala.

National Guard officials say Traxel was hit in the head by a tree limb after wind from the training helicopter blew the limb down.

Traxel was a public affairs broadcast specialist with the 70th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment out of Jefferson City, Mo. The annual training in Guatemala was a joint military and humanitarian exercise. He was providing broadcast journalism support to “Beyond the Horizon Guatemala 2012.”

Traxel is a former Marine and member of the U.S. Army.  Traxel was a decorated soldier who served in Afghanistan in 2008 and Iraq in 20111 with the Army.
