False Car Jacking Claim Made On Route 140 In Bethalto

A man who said he was the target of a car jacking is changing his tune. The Illinois State Police Say the man has recanted his story. At first, he told police two men attacked him after he stopped to help a woman along route 140 in Bethalto.

At first Illinois State police received a report of an attempted armed robbery and battery on route 140 at 7:30pm Wednesday. The victim said he stopped to help a woman fix a flat tire. He claims that while helping the woman tow men approached and robbed him. The suspects then beat and attempted to stab the victim. Then the two men and elderly woman took off in the cars.

The victim drove to an Alton hospital and called the police.

During an interview with Illinois State Police the victim revealed that he made up the story. He said that he was involved in an altercation with an acquaintance. No word if police will charge him for filing a false report.
